Indian National Flag - the tricolor

The flag was first designed by Pingali Venkayya, a writer and a geophysicist from Andhra Pradesh in 1916 based on the Swaraj flag. The color and the design had undergone some changes in 1921, 1931 and in 1947 the "Charkha" in the middle of the flag was replaced by the "Chakra", which is commonly known as the "Ashoka Chakra".

The flag should be made by the special hand-spun cloth called Khadi, popular after Mahatma Gandhi. The flag production and manufacturing rights are held by the Khadi Development and Village Industries Commission.

The following are the colors in the Indian national flag and their representations:
Saffron - It represents courage, sacrifice and patriotism.
White - The white color represents the path of truth which is lightened to guide our conduct
Green - The green color says about the fertility and prosperity of the land.
Ashoka Chakra - The Chakra should be of navy blue color with 24 spokes, it is also known as the wheel of law. The Chakra represents the continuity in the progress of the nation and the importance of the justice in a nation and in everyone's life.

When the flag was being designed, there were two religions in majority Hinduism and Islam and other religions being the minority. Thus it is said that this fact can be seen in the flag as well, where the saffron is also for the Hindus and white is for minority religions and green depicting the Islamic religion. The use and the way of the flag being displayed is defined by the law and shall be used as per the regulations of the law. The usage can't be modified by anyone in any case.
